p/s: The boutique resort mentioned above is Terrapuri Heritage Resort, owned and managed by the boss of Ping Anchorage. The idea is that each of these buildings were built using original materials and designs. What this means is that Mr. Alex (the said boss) would buy these "Terengganu palaces" from various people, dismantle them, and transport the materials to the site where it will be reconstructed again. This effort took him 19 years (and counting). The resort is still under construction but will be open sometime this year.

This is one of my favourite shots taken during the trip to Yunnan. If I remember correctly, this was taken with the camera hanging down my neck at chest level, in continous burst fire mode. This boy was a student in a private school that we went to "teach". The students there are mostly children of migrant parents from other provinces in China. They are charged exorbitant fees for attending public schools, and many cannot afford it. Therefore, private schools of this kind are set up. These "charitable" schools usually charge lower tuition fees* and are set up to cater to the needs of these families. However, with no source of funding other than through donations and school fees, private schools resort to taking-in as many students as they could possibly squeeze into a room**.

*In Malaysia (and most other countries, I believe), private schools are usually for the "rich" and "famous" and charge extremely excessive rates for tuition.

** Based on my ever unfounded, biased, and frankly, quite silly opinions :-D

...but that's my only line!

This boy was one of the pupils in the aforementioned school. He's fondly remembered for walking around the assembly area during breaks eating stuff with his bare hands.. which I suspect were never washed. The water taps there only had c-c-c-cold water. The school children do not wash themselves up let alone bathe during the five, six days in school. (The children would go home on weekends)

Then again, that was during winter.

Possibly related note to self: I find it very hard to write when I'm not thinking up stupid/lame/offensive/snide comments. It's like, "you're no fun anymore", that sort of thing.

The Long-Overdue Entry

This post (and the next few) will be dedicated to my trip to Yunnan, China during the 13 - 22 Dec 2008. The purpose of the trip was to "teach English". The real purpose cannot be disclosed here in case the Authorities accidentally stumbled on this blog while searching for "Tianamen Square" and decided to eat cake instead of doughnuts while singing "ke ren lai".

I would not do a day-to-day log as I'm way too lazy to come up with something like that. Instead, I'll just post some photos and give some colourful commentary along the way. Heh.

The Serious Part.

The photo of this woman and (grand?)child was taken on the way to the school which we would be teaching. The thing I remember about her was that she lent us a lever to the only water tap available in the immediate area. Without her, we would have boarded the bus without washing our hands after visiting the toilet.

Is tap water a luxury in this part of China? I don't think so, but for some strange reason the tap had no lever. Think about it, why would local residents carry a lever along with them whenever they needed water when they could just install one and use it among themselves?

Unrelated note to self: keep a b***** journal next time you're travelling!

CONTRACTORS.

Specifically, those Class-F ones who are usually tasked with repairing roads, changing light-bulbs, etc.

Why?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was a Class-F contractor simply known as Eff-U. Now, Eff-U's "expertise" was changing light-bulbs of street lamps along major roads. So, one day, he was given a contract to change light-bulbs along a major highway. As soon as the contract was signed, Eff-U sent his men out to complete the task. Little did he know what would happen that day...

You see, Eff-U, in all his wisdom and idiocy, did not tell his workers that they would be working at a busy highway, the kind where 40-foot trailers, cars and speed-o-bikes were known to travel at speeds exceeding 300km/hr. Nor did he even bother to purchase warning signs or the like. Relying instead, on his "past record" of successful light-bulb changes. The workers, upon arriving at the site, decided that it would be too much hard work to go back and pester their boss to buy sign boards. Besides, they've done things like this before. So they drew lots to decide who would "redirect" traffic using a simple red flag and striped plastic cones. Mind you, they weren't even equipped with power armour or whatever, just plain cloth armour.

I'll now leave the rest to your own imagination.
*Hint: lots of blood, gore, and body parts strewn all over the place.

In some ways, Malaysians are stupid. I think the "cari makan" mentality has made us a nation of idiots, infecting each one with the notion that putting food on the table is all that matters, regardless of how it is done. The "bosses" don't seem to care about the safety of their workers, nor do the workers seem to have any common sense at all. What matters, is money. As long as there's money, it's ok, it can be done.

Tax relief on housing loans.

Observation + Opinion:

Giving out housing loan tax relief is of course, good for the first-time house-buyer human/person/alien/thing. However, people who buy houses for fun and profit should not be given the relief. It wasn't stated in the news report whether the relief would be given to 20-time house buyers or not, so I'll assume it would be. I'm just THAT negative.

I also think the housing market is saturated enough. What with Singaporeans buying up all the property (in JB)..

(b) preparing and submitting applications for planning approvals, conversions, subdivisions and amalgation layout drawings;

(c) carrying out planning studies, environmental impact studies relating to land use; and

(d) preparing planning reports for any person or authority in Malaysia.

Which means, those b***** architects in Malaysia could do the jobs of land valuers, town planners, land surveyors (partly), etc.

Then what should those people do?

Unbeknowst to the MOHE, students of local public universities are being taught politics! I am now an anti-establishment-politically-motivated-student-looking-to-bring-down-the-morally-bankrupt-thong-wearing-government-!-!-!. Then again, I've always been anti-establishment. Oh, and everyone knows the government is morally bankrupt. Big news, then.

In light of the recent increase in my own awareness that town planning is not-that-so-insignificant-after-all in a world faced with environmental and social problems, I shall blog a bit about my so-called "profession".

What is town planning?

"the art and science of blah, blah, blah."

Forget that.

Town planning = Politics.

Full stop. See. Full. Stop.

Seriously.

In contrast to what many town planners may claim, political interference in the profession CANNOT be denied. If so, where do our moral obligations come from? To whom do we answer to? We need our political masters, be they government or opposition. The profession works best in a democracy. However, we must remember: the rakyat are the ones whom we're planning for, not any individual. Then again, aren't politicians supposed to represent the rakyat? Oh, sorry. Not in this country, apparently.

Why so cynical? Let's put a smile on that face! *stab!* *slash!* *cut!* *bleed!* hahAhAHAhAhaHAHahahAHahaHaHaHAha!!!

For the corrupted!

It is generally perceived that the construction industry in this country is largely corrupt. Bribes are given in order to expedite (speed up) the process of land use conversions and building approvals. Inspectors are given "coffee money" in exchange for a positive report in favour of the applicants, land use zoning plans are "improved" to accommodate a big-time developer's own plans, etc, etc, etc. I know, I heard about it from the corrupt myself.

Due to my taking the "Planning Ethics" course this semester, I am required to study about corruption. One of my assignments is to review a paper on corruption and prepare a presentation on it.

One thing I learned: if you do not "go with the flow", you're an outsider. If you're an outsider, well, you can start considering another job. Regardless of whether you're an official or a professional. Try: begging. Also: unemployment.

Now, what is the "flow"? If the industry and related authorities practice corruption like drinking teh tarik at midnight, then that is the "flow". If said industry and authorities avoid corruption like a certain "flip-flop" avoids the "new dawn", then that is the "flow".

I'm not saying that corruption is right. Far from it. I believe it's wrong. So wrong that those who willingly participate in it should burn (on a stake, on high heat, while tempting them with a fire extinguisher). However, when it comes down to "doing the right thing" and "feeding my family", which would you choose?

1. Watchmen. to put it simply, it is a must read for anyone even slightly interested in comics. A (very) complex tale.
2. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Dark. Moody. Gritty. Batman, as he's supposed to be. Loved The Dark Knight? Go read this.
3. Batman: Year One. Tells two parallel stories of the man in bat's clothing and James Gordon, and how they're connected. Very realistic.
4. DMZ 1: On The Ground & DMZ 2: Body Of A Journalist. America. 2nd Civil war. Rookie reporter. Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Great art. Great story.
5. 100 Bullets 1: First Shot, Last Call & 100 Bullets 2: Split Second Chance. A man gives you a case with an untraceable gun, 100 untraceable bullets and proof that your brother caused the death of your child. What would you do?

Most (almost all) of the comics listed above weren't written for kids.

p/s. been thinking a lot about ethics and morality recently. No thanks to a certain lecturer and his ethics class. Still, it's interesting. I mean, how could a question with 77 contradicting answers not be interesting?

A Filler Post

This is a "Filler Post", you know, the kind of post with no real significant impact or contribution to environmental protection, climate change, global warming, food shortages, (insert global crisis here) or etc. Well, except the electricity and net traffic, I guess.

Below is a photo taken during my trip to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Oh, by the way, I went for a trip to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from the 9-13 May 08. Had a great time, was fun, people were very friendly, (insert positive holiday comments here) and so on and so forth . Anyway, I'm Still Alive.

Kinda proud of the photo. My special someone even thought I downloaded it from the web =) Still, the other photos were relatively uninteresting. Gotta improve on composition and the artistic side of photography, then.

Which brings me to my next topic:

I seem to have always been "good" at the technical side of stuff. However, I've always seem to hit a stumbling block or so when it comes to truly "mastering" a certain something (say, photography). It's always been, er, "competent" but never, "inspiring". I guess I want to be artistic but just don't have the natural talent to..

Oh, well. Just rambling.

Been following politics quite closely.
IVCC Welcoming Activities 2008.
Still pondering what to do for the rest of the year.
Feeling happy.
Been lazy to blog.

4. A place for me to record the changes in my life and how I view it (saving and posting it online is somewhat "safer" [from accidentally deleting it from my hard drive, floods, fire, earthquakes, siblings, etc]).
